FULL LIST OF HOSTING MAKERSPACES

The Carrefour Numérique² is a Digital Public Space that has been aiming to reduce the digital divide for more than 10 years. A first temporary Fab Lab appeared there in June 2011 as part of Futur en Seine: the Fab Lab Squared. The same year, the Cité des Sciences participates and wins, with other EPN, a call for projects within the framework of Future Investments.

For 2 years, David and the Carrefour Numérique² team trained, experimented and met other Fab Labs. The idea: try to maintain an agile mode of operation in an existing structure and develop an activity in the best possible conditions.

Inaugurated in April 2014, the Fab Lab quickly became a mediation tool open to all, paying particular attention to 15-25 year olds far from science and technology! Initially, the Fab Lab was perceived as a technical object, which is ultimately only a pretext with regard to its many social and societal perspectives.

The Carrefour Numérique² Fab Lab offers flexible access conditions allowing it to unite a heterogeneous community! It welcomes students, artists, handymen, retirees, job seekers, young dropouts and people with disabilities. Some discover the Fab Lab during a visit to the Cité des Sciences, others discover it thanks to numerous partnerships such as the Second Chance School or the Apprentis d’Auteuil.

Users come for a variety of tools, but also a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The diversity of profiles and skills that can be encountered at the Carrefour Numérique² allows the development of very varied projects, from the drone-racer to the camera-crane, thus promoting serendipity.

From the organization of the space, through the documentation, the organization of workshops or even the reception of visitors, the users of the Fab Lab of the Carrefour Numérique² are involved in the life of the place. Doing it together is their watchword!

The Carrefour Numérique² at the Cité des Sciences received €600,000 in aid to set up its Fab Lab, including €170,000 in Dassault sponsorship and €430,000 from the Grand Emprunt.

Today, the Carrefour Numérique² team is made up of 12 people and welcomes a hard core of around a hundred people who come once or several times a week. In 2015, 140 laser cutting subscription cards were sold, 75% of which were at a reduced rate.

The Fab Lab’s annual budget is around €35,000. They come from the budget of Universcience, Future Investments and some services: space rental, external interventions or project support. Its partners include Dassault, Matworks, Aldebaran, INRIA, the Flowers laboratory, RepairCafé, Atelier Déclic, Ecole Camondo, etc.

In the future, the Carrefour Numérique² Fab Lab wishes to develop the activity for groups and companies, but also to become a training organization, in particular for the local public service.

Regarding documentation, the Fab Lab wishes to provide an aggregation platform financed by InMédiats to the tune of €80,000. Each Fab Lab would continue to document with its tool, but a plugin would make it possible to retrieve and aggregate the different flows in a standardized way in one and the same place.

The mediation team is made up of 6 people, and 2 mediators are always present when the fablab is open. Their role is to welcome, to listen, to give people confidence and to demystify the use of machines. In addition to the mediators, there are 2 technical coordinators and 2 people in charge of managing the Carrefour Numérique² spaces, including the fablab.

To promote doing it together and stimulate its community, the Carrefour Numérique² fablab offers many workshops. Inkscape, Blender at least once a month. On Wednesday afternoons, the fablab welcomes and accompanies groups over 5 to 8 sessions. It also has a “school offer”: this offer from the Cité des Sciences offers a workshop at the fablab in addition to the visit of the Cité des Sciences with a game on “how to encourage cooperation?” which allows the use of the fablab and the living lab.

The fablab also hosts and/or co-organizes many other events, such as GameJam, Space Apps, Ubuntu Parties, Repair Cafés, 3D printer assembly, robot Saturdays, etc. Finally, meetups are also organized every last Tuesday of the month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., to discuss different topics.

The Carrefour Numérique² team keeps track of what is happening in its fablab in several ways. A wiki is available to users for their projects, in particular in the form of a fablab logbook. There are completed projects, tips and tricks, but also references for the use of machines and software.

The blog allows you to document behind the scenes of events. It contains feedback from mediators and testimonials from users.

Every year, deliverables are published for InMédiats in order to report on what is happening in the place. The next deliverable will be, for example, a good practice guide on the activities carried out. “What worked well? Or moderately worked?” These reports are available on the InMédiats website.

At the Carrefour Numérique² fablab, we document to try to see what good practices are and how they can be disseminated. “With InMédiats investments, we have a dissemination objective to ensure feedback and a multiplication of these places.”
