The programme is for EU-based innovative thinkers and tinkerers. For makers to further their practice and collaborate with JRC researches. For makers open to undertake an experimental journey of exploration of the world of JRC science and local community.

First Makers-In-Residence (MIR) programme was hosted by JRC makerspace in Ispra, in 2020/21. 5 makers were chosen to create projects related to 2 topics:
(1) Youth: a life through a pandemic;
(2) Pollinators decline:can you make the difference?

Due to COVID-19, the first edition ended up being a virtual residence, as the JRC was closed and there was no access to makerspace.

Based on virtual experience from last year, and physical residency planned for November 2022, together with members of JRC we created FAQ to give a better overview of how residency in Ispra is planned.

7 QUESTIONS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THIS RESIDENCY

1. What is included in JRC MIR programme?

JRC makers-in-residence programme provides - a unique space at the crossroad between science and policy,
- space for exchange of ideas between makers, researchers and locals,
- resources (e.g. JRC makerspace, grants),
- an opportunity to engage in crosscutting projects.

2. Is there a community around JRC makerspace?

  • There is a small, disperse community of JRC staff. It is expected that makers that come for residency will form their own community. However, JRC staff will be there to support makers in creating their projects when needed

3. When do makers first meet JRC members, and can ask additional questions?

  • JRC members organise a Kick-off meeting few weeks in advance of residency so makers get all important information (about machines, accommodation, meet each other), and they have a possibility to ask additional questions they have.

4. What are machines and materials available at JRC makerspace?

  • JRC makerspace has the following machines: 1x laser cutter, 2x 3D Printers, 1x desktop CNC Milling Machine, 1x Vinyl Cutter, 1 Sewing Machine, 1x 3D Scanner. Other equipment from the JRC might be available. You would get more detail in the kick-off meeting.

5. Are makers in touch with JRC staff during creation of their project?

  • Yes. There will be a dedicated channel that will be used to communicate and there will be periodic meetings with the makers.

6. Are participants mentored and guided while developing project?

  • Makers are expected to be independent, but specific mentoring can be provided upon request. JRC mostly provides the connections with relevant JRC staff.
  • NOTE: In order to apply to the residence, makers already need to have an idea of the project they want to develop with us. The application will be evaluated on this project proposal.

7. Will there be an introduction to JRC and its missions/projects/programmes if makers want to know more?

  • Yes. JRC makerspace team provides an overview of the JRC in the kick-off meeting. In any case, they are always open to answer to questions that the makers might have regarding the JRC.
