Motorfabrikken Marstal - a 100 y/o former engine factory on the small Danish island of Ærø. Starting from 2017, FabLab has been growing with the intention of creating a cultural center, a co-working space, engine workshop and maker space. Now, almost five years and several events later, we have finished the co-working space, and have secured funding for the workshop and maker space.

We will need help designing and furnishing a 120 sqm FabLab in the old smithy of the factory. The space will retain much of its rustic look and many of the original tool boards. Much of the original interior can be reused or repurposed in creative ways.

The community in and around Motorfabrikken Marstal is a diverse group of maritime students, sailors, and entrepreneurs ranging from 15 to 81. It did truly take a village, and our visiting maker will have a unique chance to participate in this community.

What we need

We would be looking for a maker who is both creative, aesthetically conscious, and who has the skills to help furnish: mounting shelves, making signs, moving machines, ordering the right lamps and connecting them. Ærø is very close to Germany, so most people also speak a little German here, but English is the working language.

The next open call will be between the 1st of March till 31st of May 2022. If you are interested to join us, feel free to click the “Start your journey” button.

Our FabLab was created single-handedly by Jørgen Friis in 2017- a former physicist and technical director for the island. He started in 2018 with just one laser cutter and 3D printer. Today we have several homemade 3D printers and CNC milling machines.

Next spring, the smithy in the factory will be furnished, and Jørgen will need a helping hand.

Our friends at FabLab Roskilde (RUC) and Copenhagen FabLab have suggested we try and look for an international maker, who would want to help Jørgen for a period of time.

And when Jørgen met Alexandre at the Nordic Bootcamp in Copenhagen earlier this year, it just confirmed that this is something we should definitely pursue.

Jørgen Friis - DYNAMO FabLab manager

Alan Olsen - DYNAMO FabLab deputy

Nina Rydahl Andersen - director of Motorfabrikken Marstal

We provide courses for the students from the local maritime school, as well as for local makers. Almost all the work we do is a volunteer.

Our business model is currently based on a combination of memberships and donations. When the lab is fully finished, we will also offer pay-per-lesson or similar commercial models.

We partner with Marstal Navigationsskole (Marstal Maritime Academy).
