HAL9K has a board of 7 elected members, but the place is not really managed by anyone. People are coming here as individuals working alone and/or with other people. As of early 2019, the board was made of:

HAL9K community is made of a broad variety of people, coming here from contrasted backgrounds. There is no master plan, and each member is responsible of his/her actions in the space. People are free to make what they want and what they need, even more if the project is fun! And of course, everyone is equal.

People coming are looking for different things. Some people are here for the social aspect, to talk about their projects or just interacting with other members. Others come only to work and are focused on their own needs and goals. Usually, these members will directly start another project when they finish a product/project.

Projects here are mainly individual but sometimes, if the project is really fun and interesting, people will decide to work on it together. But big projects bringing everyone together are rare. Everyone come there, like an open-box, where people can use the local facilities.

HAL9K, like many similar places, is build around a community organisation, or association with a board of elected members. It is a common structure in Denmark, especially when you create a “common value” for the community and the society.

HAL9K is run only thanks to the fees payed by the members. To be a member, you will have to pay 150dkk/month (~20€) and 75dkk/month (~10€) if you are a student. The hackerspace is self-sufficient and the fees are enough to pay the whole place, given by the municipality. Parts of the facilities and machinery were given by Platform4, and some members of the place at the beginning of the project.

HAL9K organises events and workshops, but the amount & frequency of events depends on the energy and will of the members. The hackerspace also takes part in different makers events in the country, like the Aarhus Mini Makerfaire and Summer Hack close to Viborg.

HAL9K made some local projects and sold them, like the IR-øje (IR-eye) electronic kit sold between 120dkk (~16€) and 150dkk (~20€). Another money income is the sell of beverages (soda or beer), you can order one can or bottle for 5dkk (less than 1€).
