Greatly inspired by Platform4 (in the same city) and Labitat in Copenhagen, HAL9K has a long story. The name comes from the I.A. in the movie “The Space Odyssey” by Stanley Kubrick. The 9K is a reference to the zipcode of Aalborg, where the hackerspace was created. Luckily, the domain name was available!
The idea of HAL9K makerspace came in 2010 in an open-bar’s basement. The founders wanted a place like what they had in school when they were kids: a kind of free and limitless space to build crazy things. After some long conversations with other people in the maker movement, they found hackerspace.org which helped them to build the project and the place. Not so long after, in 2012, HAL9K was located in a large space (~400m²) close to the harbor, sharing the address with Platform4 (another hackerspace).
In 2014, HAL9K moved from the harbor to the south of the city, in their own place, rented from the municipality of Aalborg. Some years after, in 2018, the community was made of 50 frequent members, sharing their knowledge and using the devices and facilities to make their own projects.
