For this recipe, put ideas coming from people willing to change the world, wait few years, organize meetings to discuss it, again and again, start small and seize the opportunities. You will get Neti Makerspace. « I call it the Darwinism of ideas ». Mara, one of the founder, put seeds in the Argentinian ecosystem, waiting for the good timing and good people to take the plunge in this collaborative project.

At the origin, as a representative of Politecnico di Milano, she recruited Janina y Alejandro who came back from their studies in Italy with respectively the idea of designing a product line and of opening a makerspace. For her part, she thought for several years to open a sustainable hotel. Together, they shared their ideas and realized that if at first sight, they seemed opposite, they could be complementary: by starting with a makerspace, Janina and Mara will have then the resources to undertake their projects.

Back to the reality, they had to face 2 main challenges: expensive rents and a maker movement barely emerging in Argentina. Fortunately, they used their perseverance and imagination to turn these difficulties into opportunities. Their idea: to organize a Netithon open for free to all citizens to learn how to design and prototype solutions with a social challenge. This proposal and the first theme (to promote sustainable nutrition) had inspired companies who participated in the financing of the event and in the purchase of the required machines. And this was just the beginning! Since then, a dozen free events have been organized in Buenos Aires to drive the maker movement and to start innovating through design and digital manufacturing.

Nowadays, Neti, which name means “No Es Todo Inventado” (It’s Not All Invented), plays an innovation-maker role in the country. Their actions enabled them to gain in experience and to sign, in 2017, their first contract with a company, Drean, to develop innovative ideas using a methodology that combines people-centered design concepts to obtain tangible results. That is how Neti Makerspace grew to support both companies, earning then enough money to also support for free citizens and entrepreneurs in their projects.

In 2019, the new challenges will be :

  • to develop an open innovation community,
  • to support new companies in their development such as Gire with their intrapreneur program through Girethon,
  • to prototype solutions for smart cities and smart support for citizens,
  • to collaborate with international organizations.

Do you know the B-Corp? Under this acronym lies a model of companies for whom benefits are as important as people and environment. These values shared by the founders of NETI, naturally made them join this movement, introducing meanwhile this innovative concept in Argentina. Such as innovative and design methodologies they apply every day, they also aim to inspire people by showing the example in term of management and corporate strategy.

Concretely, they work with a horizontal model, without hierarchy, with an organization based on confidence, responsibility, freedom, and solidarity. And these values are key to run their unique team model, composed of a core team and freelancers who are part of their maker communities.

5 members are part of the core team :

  • Mara Provenzano, one of the founders in charge of the company relationships and speaker during conferences
  • Alejandro Repetto one of the founders and main business developer
  • Jimena Califa, an industrial designer in charge of projects coordination and main contributor to the online communication
  • Tomás Ottolenghi, an industrial designer in charge of projects coordination
  • Esteban Bonomi, graphic designer and workshop manager
  • Iván Fardjoume, electronic engineer and IoT facilitator

Even if they have a specific role, collective projects are divided into tasks and shared among the members, every week during a team meeting, depending on their strengths and willing. Then everyone is responsible for their achievements and free to organize their time to perform them. They share their advancement during the weekly meeting and the new opportunities identified the past week. Such as a cooperative, they are encouraged to grow the business with their social network and participating to events. Not all the members are full-time : some of them are part-time to adjust to the business demand and sometimes to allow them to develop their own company, such as Jimena who design and sell online digital manufactured objects for bar and restaurant in her company Minus. If this model may seem complex to handle peak workload, it works very well thanks to the team flexibility and solidarity.

Speaking of peak workload, to handle the one linked to events such as netithon or to company projects, members of their maker communities strengthen the troops according to the required skills as freelances. The team met them during events such as netithon or as employees of a client company and have in common to be passionate people with a disruptive, open-minded and maker spirit. Among them, 20 members are often requested because of their spirit as well as their competencies or availabilities.

The involvement of NETI is also expressed in their actions:

  • During events, they promote gender quality as a key factor for a good human resources stability and diversity
  • They have organized a World cafe with their maker community to benefit from this concept in order to give them the freedom of speech so that they can identify the weaknesses of the community such as the precocity of the freelance model and solutions such as being a good payer.

This organization has already proven its worth: it attracts new members every year and new clients who share the same values.

The NETI’s community is as various as the worldwide community of makers. University students, artists, entrepreneurs, graphics and industrial designers, citizens, makers of other labs and companies are attracted by the various type of animation done by the NETI team. The makerspace being opened during those meetings, the community can use the machines in the context of very concrete challenges.

The key event is the NETIathon. It looks like a hackathon but with at the end a physical prototype made thanks to the makerspace. Each time the thematic is different: IoT, Smart city, Sustainable food, Agroecology,…2 to 3 times per year it gathers the community and attracts newcomers like companies who are more and more interested in the maker movement and how it modifies the innovation process. As a positive side effect, companies often help the lab to get new materials and machines for the events and also ask the team to organize internal private events, like innovation sprints.

The speed making date is a very special event that allows makers, entrepreneurs and « startupers » to share and challenge their projects to specialists (designers, sales representatives, marketing managers, lawyers,…) with a speed dating format.

Then, each weekend, there are the NETI popups during which are organized courses, conferences or sharing sessions that gather all or a part of the community. For instance, we had the chance to exchange with the Buenos aires makers community about our experience and best practices that could answer their challenges.

NETI is also connected to the world through worldwide innovation JAM sessions. The purpose is to address an issue finding solutions like an hackaton during 3 days with a worldwide community.

For the NETI team, the community matters a lot. In that logic, it doesn’t hesitate to question the way it does animation. For that, the team gathers its community during World café applying the World cafe methodoly.

Starting 2019, they have in mind to adapt the Tikkun Olam Maker event, which are focused on handicap issues, to adress pet issue, like maintenance of animal shelters.

The NETI team has tested many business models before adopting the actual one. Memberships, courses, specific trainings, production of products to sell them. But none convinced either the community nor the team. As the maker movement wasn’t well known and spread at start, it was very difficult and time consuming to reach and convince the public. This long process weakened the business model.

Finally, a B2B model was elected. The added value of the NETI team is its ability to help companies to think and work as a startup and to give collaborators the maker spirit. The team organizes innovation sprints with methodologies based on the make to do design thinking with an alternative way to classic ones. Depending on the year, the number of projects is between 5 to 10. They work on citizens assistance (smart cities), IoT, intrapreneurships program for companies,…

This activity allows the NETI to be sustainable and to organize open events to build its community. As sides effect, those events allow the team to find talented people to work with them as freelances (20 as from 2018), to attract new companies and to show them what they are able to achieve with its community.

The 5 members of the team are Full time or part time. Some of them have their own projects. But, to avoid any job instability issues, they gather during world cafe to discuss about it. The team is motivated to get the certification B which means to have a positive environmental and social impact (about its own employees also) and to be sustainable.

World café to strengthen the community

catégories
Communauté Evénements

What is it?

It’s a simple, effective, flexible format for building a strong community through dialogue and knowledge sharing.

In concrete terms?

In 2018, NETI Makerspace organized a World Café event for its community of makers in order to identify the strengthens and the weaknesses of its community itself and thus of the maker movement in Argentina.
The idea is to gather at least twelve participants in a cozy atmosphere such as the one of a cafe, to spread people around different tables where a member of the team animates the discussion with open questions about a topic linked to the objective of the event. After approximately 20 minutes, participants move to a next table where another topic built upon the previous one is discussed. Discussion results are directly noted down on a flip chart. The “table host” welcomes new participants and informs them about the results of the previous discussion at the table. Finally, the results of all groups will be reflected on in a common plenum session. The team concludes about the results and can animate a debate about further actions and opportunities that can be undertaken with further cooperation of participants.

Why it’s interesting?

It’s an easy, cheap and powerful tool to create and animate a community. An underlying assumption of World Café events is that collective discussion can shift people’s conceptions and encourage collective action. As a consequence, this method is relevant to build a community as it shares the values of the maker movement: knowledge sharing and collective spirit where everyone has a role to play. It could be used to identify common interest or needs to design adapted workshops or activities or to identify underlying difficulties to tackle.

What is it?

It’s an open and free event during a day to gather citizens who will design and make together solutions to tackle a social challenge.

In concrete terms?

NETI Makerspace organizes every year several “Netiaton” which consists of a daily event, opened to everyone without prior experiences nor specific skills, where experts of design and digital fabrication will support them in the creation of a collaborative solution regarding the topic of the day. The idea is to meet, share, learn and have fun. All of what is done will be under Creative Commons license (open source). To build, they have machines and tools for industrial design, clothing design, digital design (3D printers), electronics (Arduinos) and all materials for participants to experiment freely. The day also includes talks, entertainment, and catering. NETI organized Netiaton with various topics such as sustainable nutrition in the cities or improve mobility in the city through wearable technologies. The first Netiaton marked the launch of NETI Makerspace in 2013 when they didn’t have space or machines.

Why it’s interesting?

This event offers a good opportunity for people to discover, during a day, the design and digital fabrication while meeting people and practicing on an inspiring subject. For the makerspace, this event could be a good start to create a community before opening a physical space, to identify the subjects of interests to adapt its offer and to gain in experience and reputation. For those who already have a physical space, this event highly contributes to the diffusion of the maker spirit and to the professional reputation of the team while starting to tackle actual and relevant social challenges. It can be sponsored by companies which discover at the same time the possibilities offered by collaborative workshop, design and digital fabrication.
