Our story or what are Soup and Socks e.V. and how Habibi.Works started

Soup and Socks e.V. is a non-profit German organisation founded in 2015 by a group of young adults who wanted to get active and set signs of solidarity with people who fled their countries. This led to their current project: the intercultural makerspace Habibi.Works. Since August 2016, highly capable team members from 16 different countries run this extraordinary makerspace for refugees and locals in the north of Greece.

In a context in which sustainable responses are rare, the project provides platforms for education, empowerment and encounter.

The makers have access to 10 well equipped working areas, among them a wood workshop, a metal workshop, a sewing atelier and a Media Lab with access to advanced technology such as 3D printer and laser cutter. Most recently, they became part of the Precious Plastic community and started this workshop!

Being a maker wipes off the stigma of being passive or helpless and offers caring individuals, brilliant minds and hard working hands new opportunities. The approach of creating solutions instead of waiting for solutions has an incomparable impact on people’s current living situation, on their motivation to continue or use their education and on their confidence to build an independent life within the European societies.

It works

Habibi.Works is a proof that things can be changed, and that every person can have an impact.

The team consists of hard-working, motivated experts from all over the world who bring in their time, experience and energy to make the project grow.

Today, Habibi.Works is a makerspace located close to a refugee camp in Ioannina, Greece. The ten different working areas (community kitchen, carpentry, metal workshop, sewing atelier, creative atelier, media lab, bike repair station, library, community garden and gym) are platforms for empowerment, education and social encounters.

People from the nearby refugee camps and Greek local are getting together with international experts to share experience, gain new skills and create solutions. Working across language divides (camp residents may only speak arabic, farsi, etc., and volunteers also come from all over the world), it’s amazing they’re able to do so much— and to do it so collaboratively.

We support people to create solutions themselves. We listen to their ideas instead of telling them what to do. We encourage them to share their skills and teach; we empower them instead of carrying out something for them. We live the values we would like to see in our societies: respect, solidarity, equity. In our decision making, we try to be as transparent as possible. Open and honest communication is key.

_“In the early days, the space and its volunteers were working with extremely limited resources— long-term volunteers (only half) jokingly recount refugees themselves offering money to the project or particularly rough-looking individual volunteers.

Today, Habibi.Works is a little more established, but still, aid is a two way street, and the space belongs as much to residents of the refugee camps as to its volunteers. Everyone works together to co-cook meals for the community, to improve the space, and to support each other’s individual projects.”Open World: Habibi Works

Today, external support makes their work possible. To contribute you can choose from different options which can be cash, materials or even at no cost for you. To learn more -> follow the link

Habibi.Dome

The project Habibi Dome was created through collaboration and collective thinking and led to a building. It serves as a modular, spatial (triangular) structure, as a flexible construction.

The temporary “pop up” structure is meeting point, platform for workshops and events. People generate access to knowledge sharing and to social participation through artistic, collective and architectural methods.

Home.Work

Home.Work is a mobile toolbox that enables people to make a home a home, when they need it most.

Designed with the needs of people living in isolated refugee camps in Greece in mind, Home.Work transforms from a toolbox to a home workstation in a matter of minutes. The box includes all the tools needed to repair and build stuff, and create a garden, too.

Home.Work was built and piloted with the community in Katsikas Refugee Camp, which is a new but barren home to nearly 1,000 refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Congo and many other places.

Inspired by the Habibi.Works humanitarian fab lab, this simple idea helps re-engage talented and motivated makers who, because of circumstances beyond their control, are now refugees.
