  • What’s the project story?

Every two years since 25 years, the Colegio de Arquitectos de Costa Rica organize the International Architecture Biennal Costa Rica. During this event, design projects are rewarded by the many commissions who composed this association.

In the context of the 2018 one, we, the commission of the climate change, decided to build our own award statue. The one that had been given to reward the most sustainable architectural designs.

To be consistent with our subject and also for a budget constraints we decided to build our fully personalized statue in a FabLab. From the beginning, I had in mind to do it in the FabLab Veritas as it is considered as the top one in the country. Don’t think I say that because I am a former student of the Veritas Universidad but if it existed when I was studying for sure I would have been there to do design projects.

  • How was the lab useful for your project?

I came with the design only. I had no idea of how to do it, with which material and with what machine. The Lab helped me with everything. First, the team showed the machines and the quality and results that can be achieved with each of them. The big added value of the lab was it adapted my design to the machines and processes constraints.

  • What’s the project’s greatest success so far?

We succeeded to build three high-quality award statues with only 324$. 10 times less than if we asked a private company to do it. And it seems it has marked on other commissions’ minds!

  • What’s your vision for the project & next steps?

For the next editions of the event, we plan to build new ones and we expect other commissions will do the same with the FabLab Veritas.
