Mouti

It is an educational toothbrush that allows children from the age of 3 to develop oral hygiene habits that they will keep their whole life. The innovation is based on the use of colors and logos used to indicate to the child the duration of brushing and the part of the mouth to be brushed. Everything comes from a final design project in TALCA University realized in partnership with Protein Lab in 2016. What was planned to be a temporary project have been transformed into a personal and professional project. As a product designer, I wanted to design a useful educational project for everyday life. The success of my idea went beyond the scope of my studies and the first contest I won, the Innovathon during the Telethon event, was the trigger that launched me in this adventure. In 2 years, my partner and I applied to many competitions, like the Socialab or Start up Chile. With patience and perseverance, we succeeded to benefit from a very valuable financial and professional support. As part of our momentum, we spent 5 months in the ecosystem entrepreneurs in the United States before returning to Chile and receiving a financial assistance from Corfo.
- How the workshop was useful?
Protein Lab has been a valuable partner in the technological development of the project. I, as a designer, and my husband, as a business developer, we easily came up with a business model and the design of the product but we had no idea of the technologies needed to achieve it. The Protein Lab team has been a precious support in helping us to make our first prototypes and to validate or adapt our technical assumptions.
- What’s the project’s greatest success so far?
The first tests done with the children and their parents will remain etched in my memory. Seeing their reactions to the product I imagined, their progress, sometimes faster than I could have expected, it all confirmed the positive and social impact I could make with Mouti.
- What’s your greatest failure(s)& lesson(s) so far?
For 2 years my career with my husband and partner is made of failures from which we learned and we built our company. The most difficult thing is to reconcile my private and professional life by working with my husband, without any stable financial contribution. We were not prepared to perform tasks as diverse and varied as accounting or communication, nor to have to wait as long before we could reach the sustainability.
- What’s your vision for the project & next steps?
We are currently testing the products with providers. Once this step validated, we will be ready to offer it on the market! And to get there, the first step will be to launch a crowdfunding campaign planned on Indiegogo to validate the project with users and to find the remaining funding for the production of the first toothbrushes.
- How anyone interested can contribute to the project?
Support this project by contributing to Indiegogo and spread the word! Thank you!
