The Verstehbahnhof (eng: understanding station) is an open workshop, media production studio, data center, event hall, social kitchen and public living room. A social and cooperative space for curious spirits and lifelong learners.

It started +10 years ago when Daniel and Anke met in Berlin and wanted to get out of the capital.

They arrived at this village - Fürstenberg/Havel (4k inhabitants) - and wanted to launch a playground and open workshop.

Later in 2015, the train station of Furstenberg/Havel was looking to host in its heart new activities because for some reason the train station office was closing (even if trains continue to pass and stop by).

In 2017 Daniel and Anke proposed to launch an education activities and they brought their equipment to start weekly activities inside the train station. It is how the community started to gather around Verstehbahnhof

Little by little, the local community started to renovate this train station which is now (almost) fully renovated and well equipped.

Now the Verstehbahnhof is equipped to welcome individuals and groups. They want to encourage curiosity about the future, convey a self-determined use of technologies, and enable (young) people to help shape the digital society according to their ideas.

If you come in residency in Verstehbahnhof you’ll have the chance to meet a wonderful local community. Let’s just highlight two of them. Anke and Daniel.

  • Anke studied textile (btw, she is a knitting enthusiast). She’s an expert in all things ‘open government’.
  • Daniel studied IT and he is now a systems engineer and activist.
    Both of them are really engaged here (they welcomed us when we came to visit them) and around them an active local community is slowly taking part in the initiative. Until now, everyobody in this community work as a volunteer.

Through the renovation, the local community developed a strong feeling of belonging to the initiative launched by Anke and Daniel.

The heart of Verstehbahnhof is well-equipped now with electronics laboratory, soldering stations, measuring devices, growing machine park such as cutting plotters, laser cutters, 3D printers, sewing and embroidery machines (btw : knitting, crocheting, spinning, darning - textile handicrafts also have fans in the space).

They even have a media production studio, it is also possible to propose or attend lectures, presentations, and discussions in the Verstehbahnhof.

Whether a cozy meeting in the living room, rummaging in the library, or cooking together in the shared kitchen - the understanding station is also a social infrastructure beyond the workshop.
