Brain Machine is a “sound and light machine”, made with sunglasses and electronic, that produces a meditative state with colored hallucinations during the use and a feeling of relaxation afterward. Using a microcontroller (a small programmable chip), the pair of glasses flashes the LEDs at the same frequencies as the brainwaves. After a while using this circuit, people get to see images. With the right frequency, they are even able to induce lucid dreams.

- What’s the project story?

It all started when I met Mitch Altman, the inventor of the first brain machine. I am an inventor myself, passionate about electronics and education. So when I met this genius, who asked himself, “What would happen if you could play a recording of brainwaves inside someone’s brain?”, I naturally wanted to get on aboard his crazy project. I took his open-source project, a circuit that changes the brain waves by means of luminous and sonic impulses, to improve it and bring it to Brazil for people to enjoy it. After months of work and test, I made a tutorial to enable everyone to make it. They just need a microcontroller, a pair of glasses, leds, printed circuit with components and a soldering iron. I also organize workshops where people learn electronics through this project. This project is aligned with the philosophy of my company, Mau Maker, which aims to empower people through technology in a fun way. We can hear people talking about controlling things with their mind. What if we do the opposite, making things which control our mind? 🙂

- How the workshop was useful?

Lilo Zone is my place of work. I made my project there and I benefited from the community to have great feedbacks that made me reach my target. I also made the tutorial in collaboration with Zucchini press, the team specialized in the writing support who works in Lilo Zone as residents.

- What’s the project’s greatest success so far?

The feedback I got from the users were great. After 12 minutes, people felt amazed by the effect of the glasses. However, for those who are used to train their brain with techniques such as meditation, they didn’t like it. The participants in the workshops also valued my pedagogy so it is a good start!

- What’s your greatest failure(s)& lesson(s) so far?

The biggest lesson I got comes from my previous company. I tried to open an ecommerce for makers but it failed. I learned that people trust you and believe in your projects if you have a physical address where they can meet you. Now, with Lilo Zone and the workshops I organize, I gave to this project the best possible odds to succeed.

- What’s your vision for the project & next steps?

I will work on the business model and the communication and still organize workshops to make it accessible for everyone.

- How anyone interested can contribute to the project?

I am opened to collaborate with everyone interested to contribute in this project. For those who want more information about it or to participate in a workshop, send me an email.
