The story of Lilo zone is closely linked to the story of a person. Lina Lopes. Behind the curtain, be prepared to meet a woman, coming from another galaxy, who transforms technology into art. This multifaceted woman has forged her unique vision of her environment through multiple lives (actress, stage director, programmer, biohacker, visual installation creator, …) to become the heart of a space, attracting varied talented people like a magnet.

Created in 2015 with a friend, Luis Leão, Lilo Zone started as an “atelier” to impulse the creative use of technology through workshops, lectures and projects for clients. 2 years later, tired of training people with no passion or long term projects, she found 4 new partners to give to Lilo Zone a new boost. In 2018, after 2 months of research and 3 months of renovation, they opened the new Lilo Zone to gather professionals with a long-term project, using technology in a creative way, and willing to work in synergy with a serious, talented and friendly community.

Built in an organic way, the space evolved progressively according to the needs: it started with the kitchen and a “saloon”, key to build the community, then with opened but private space for each professional to end up with a makerspace, closed to the saloon, 6 months ago. “I cannot tell you how it will be tomorrow”. 1 year later, the team succeeded to make a living space, every day full with people linked by values such as respect and collaboration, who are shaping it and giving it a soul.

Their plan for the next years? They have no idea and don’t want to think about it. Their objective is rather to fully embraced the present, being opened to people with new projects mixing art and technology as a hub for a growing community. For them, innovation is about creating the problem of the future. They will create it and then find the solution. Be prepared.

When you push the doors of Lilo Zone, you will enter in an environment shaped by the 4 partners, 4 different personalities who stand for the 4 pillars in which stand all the space activities.

Lina Lopes, the funder of the first Lilo Zone. Artist, actress, stage director, biohacker, creative installation manager…based on her experience, this 34 years old woman considers herself as one of the best experts in the mix of art and technology and a queen in time management. As a result, she succeeds to distribute her energy and time in Lilo Zone and in her multiple companies :

  • Lilo Think to apply her creative methodology based on art and technology to clients projects
  • BioLiloLab to make prototype with new biomaterial
  • Silo ONG to foster and publicize cultural projects in rural areas
  • Nena: a wearable technology kit to make people explore this new domain with basic textile technology components and a creative board game

Mauricio Jabur, the right-hand man of Lina, is also the MacGyver of the team. Always curious, willing to experiment, this maker passionated by education and collaborative projects puts all his energy and knowledge in electronics, physics and programming to train kids through innovative workshops and to support clients in the development of their projects with his company MauMaker.

Rafael Nepo, a content producer, is the digital pillar of the team. Passionate about data, communication and web, he put his expertise in service of clients to help them deliver the accurate content with the relevant support. He makes Keynote presentation support and coaches speakers to deliver their key messages and manages a team of curators specialized in the content, in his company Mee to manage (search or display) information online the best way possible.

Nathan Rabinovitch, the physician by training and educator by passion. After a job in finance, he left everything he knows to focus on what means to him: transmit his passion for physics through interactive and pedagogic workshops. After years of investigation and experience, he developed an educational kit, the Beta Kit to learn electronics for all ages. It is a project that encourages people to learn from their own ideas using their own hands by simplifying the development of projects and solutions based on electronics and Arduino.

Trust, communication, and collaboration make these 4 pillars becoming one project :

  • They collaborate on each other projects and share the responsibilities of Lilo Zone, depending on their skills and willing
  • They structure the communication and take the time required during their collective breakfast, with slack or WhatsApp, to share the information, the difficulties, their opinion and to make the decision
  • They based their relations on trust for the finance and the management of their priorities and lead by example.

The first circle is made up by members working in close relationship with the team. For instance, Zucchini video or Zucchini press are 2 teams of independent entrepreneurs who rent a professional space in Lilo Zone, work for them on their projects of communication (respectively making video or publishing articles and content) and benefit from their network to attract new clients. For the team, inviting these entrepreneurs was strategic: they wanted to improve their communication to highlight the projects made by Lilo Zone while offering to their clients this service and using it for their personal enterprises.

In the second circle, you can find all the makers, designers, artists, who punctually worked with the team on projects. They are often people coming from one of the personal networks of the associates but also makers from the Fablab and local maker network, such as Kenzo Abiko or We Fab with which the team works in close collaboration. Mari Nagem, an international artist, is also a good example. She designs exhibitions that made us think about social trends, such as the one about the happiness dogme, by mixing art and technology and invites the team to collaborate on projects or participates to theirs.

The third circle consists of all the people who used punctually one of the 3 services of Lilo Zone:

  • prototyping to transform their challenge into an expected opportunity and their idea into a project
  • machine rental (morning, afternoon, afterwork) to finish their projects with the team support
  • space rental to organize events or workshops

They have discovered the space with the word-of-mouth, the conferences made by the associates during various events (MakerFaire, Campus Party, …) and through the social networks. Some of them made their first step during the « Café technologic », a monthly free event, open to everyone to discover a topic with experts and to discuss it with the community. The topic is suggested by the community or answers a need of the 2 first circles members (blockchain, how works the colors, use of technology for superstition, …).

These circles are opened: a user from the 3rd circle may become a resident, in the first circle, if the team values her/his project and if she/he shares the same values and spirit. Some people from a third circle, who just participated in the Café techno, may offer their services to be a punctual partner in first or second circles members’ projects. By succeeding to combine professionalism with friendly and collaborative atmosphere, Lilo Zone attracts and retains talented people ready for a new way of living from their passion.

« Our business model is inspired by the world of theater ». Former actress and stage director, Lina Lopes took from this world what she likes the most to design the model of Lilo Zone: a collaborative way of working for people to live from their passion.

Indeed, the collaboration lies in every financial aspect.

First, the initial investment. The cost of the 3 months renovation of the space was compensated by the free rent dealt with the owner. In addition, the cost was drastically reduced by the effort of the community to build the furniture and to improve the existing installation (electricity, space separation changes, …). The machines belong to the associates who brought them to the space and repaired them.

Then, the space. The fixed costs (rent, taxes, cleaning service, energy) are paid by Lina, the official tenant, and the variable costs (food, material,…) are paid by the 4 associates depending on the needs and occasions. The major decisions which could affect the costs are discussed either during the breakfast or by Whats App to be validated by all the team. The total amount is shared among them and they reimburse their part computed by Lina every end of the month. A residency program is offered to entrepreneurs aligned with their mission in order to reimburse the space costs while completing the team with complementary expertise.

Eventually, human resources. To perform the activities offered by the space, no salary is paid. When a client asks from a prototyping and coaching service, the team analyzes the needs and gathers the adequate members among the team and the community, depending on the availabilities and the skills required. The incomes are distributed among all of them through one of the associate’s business.

The objective of Lilo Zone is to enable people to live from their passion. As a consequence, it attracts clients and distributes work among a community of trust members where each talent is valued. What is it?

A Residence is offered to entrepreneurs with expertise which could be useful for the makerspace.

In concrete terms?

Lilo Zone offers to video makers, Yugo Hattori and his team, with whom Lina Lopes worked once, to join the space through their residential program. The team was looking for professionals in communication in order to value their projects and to offer to clients this service. As a consequence, they offered them a long-term contract where :

  • they will pay rent for a private office
  • create a business to offer their service as video makers, under the name of Zucchini video, with Lina Lopes as a partner.

In exchange, they will benefit from:

  • an affordable space to work
  • the expertise of the team to grow their business
  • the network of the team to find clients.

In 2 months, they were paid to produce videos for the associates business and for some of their contacts.

Why it’s interesting?

Offering a space to work and a business partnership to entrepreneurs with complementary expertise is a good opportunity to decrease the price of external providers for the same of service as well as offering new and attractive service to clients of the makerspace.

Brain machine

Brain Machine is a “sound and light machine”, made with sunglasses and electronic, that produces a meditative state with colored hallucinations during the use and a feeling of relaxation afterward. Using a microcontroller (a small programmable chip), the pair of glasses flashes the LEDs at the same frequencies as the brainwaves. After a while using this circuit, people get to see images. With the right frequency, they are even able to induce lucid dreams.
